Glossary
Terms #
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| a | Distance from the weld line (or the angle heel) to the first beam-side bolt column (Manual Part 10). |
| Advisory | A failed recommendation. It is shown, but it does not make the connection inadequate. |
| ASD / LRFD | Allowable strength design (Rn/Ω ≥ Ra) and load and resistance factor design (φRn ≥ Ru), AISC 360-22 B3. |
| Auto-design | ILX's search for an adequate design, keeping pinned fields. |
| Batch design | Designing a schedule of marks from one base connection. |
| Bolt group method | How the strength of an eccentric bolt group is assembled from per-bolt strengths: sum (default), min or split. |
| C, C′ | Instantaneous-center coefficients of an eccentric bolt group: C for the combined load, C′ for moment only (Manual Part 7). |
| Calc package | One PDF report for every connection of a project, with a cover and contents. |
| Code compliance | The detailing and applicability requirements (spacing, edge distances, hole types, procedure limits, weld rules), listed by topic. |
| Combo | The load combination that governs a check. |
| Configuration | The support-side / beam-side fastening: Weld / Bolt, Bolt / Bolt, Bolt / Weld or Weld / Weld. |
| Conventional / extended | The two single-plate procedures of Manual Part 10: Table 10-9 (conventional) and Muir and Hewitt (extended). |
| Cope, c, dc | A cut-out of the beam flange and web at the end; c is its length, dc its depth. |
| Envelope | The worst result over all load combinations or cases. |
| Feasibility | Whether the geometry can physically be built. A connection that cannot is NOT FEASIBLE. |
| Fix hint | The "How to fix" text under a failing check. |
| Governing check | The strength check with the highest ratio. |
| Input hash | A short fingerprint of a connection's inputs, printed on every report page. |
| Keynote | A numbered tag that replaces a long callout on a letter-size sheet; the text is listed under the view. |
| Leh, Lev | Horizontal and vertical edge distances to the bolt centre. |
| lc | Clear distance used for tearout, measured along the line of action of the bolt force. |
| Mark | The connection's identifier, such as B-1. |
| My defaults | Your own title block and report settings, which apply to every project that does not override them. |
| NG | Not good: a strength or code-compliance check fails. |
| N/F, NOT FEASIBLE | The geometry cannot be built; strength results are not meaningful. |
| OSL | Outstanding leg of an angle (the leg on the beam). |
| Pin (field) | Locks an input so auto-design keeps its value. |
| Pin (connection, project) | Keeps it at the top of the project panel. |
| Project override | A setting that a project changes from your defaults. |
| Ratio | Required ÷ available (or, for a detailing check, the measured value against the limit). OK when ≤ 1.0. |
| Setback | The gap between the support face and the beam end. |
| SSL, LSL, OVS, STD | Short-slotted, long-slotted, oversized and standard holes (AISC 360-22 Table J3.3). Horizontal or vertical is the slot direction on the drawing. |
| Suggested fix | A value ILX computes to resolve a problem, applied with one click. |
| Template | A saved set of connection inputs for reuse in any project. |
| tmax | The maximum plate thickness for rotational ductility (Table 10-9, or Mmax for the extended procedure). |
| TOS | Top of steel. |
